Size Guide
At Native Inkas Shop, we understand that finding the perfect fit is essential to your satisfaction. Because many of our garments are handmade by skilled artisans in Ecuador, sizing can vary slightly from mass-produced clothing. This guide will help you select the right size for our authentic handwoven sweaters, jackets, and traditional apparel.
1. General Sizing Information
Handmade Variations
Our handmade items are crafted by artisans using traditional techniques passed down through generations. Because each piece is made by hand rather than produced in a factory, you may notice slight variations in:
- Color:Â Natural dyes and materials may produce subtle color variations from piece to piece.
- Pattern:Â Woven patterns may have minor variations in alignment or spacing.
- Fit:Â Handmade items may vary by up to 1 inch in measurements compared to the listed size.
- Texture:Â The natural weave of alpaca and wool creates unique texture variations.
These variations are part of the charm and authenticity of Indigenous craftsmanship and are not considered defects.
Material Characteristics
Our garments are made from premium natural materials that have unique properties:
- Alpaca Wool Blend:Â Naturally stretches and conforms to your body shape over time. Expect a slight “break-in” period.
- Sheep’s Wool:Â Durable and warm. May feel slightly stiff initially but softens with wear and washing.
- Cotton Blends:Â Breathable and lightweight. Minimal stretch; size accordingly.
- Traditional Weaves:Â Hand-loomed fabrics have natural texture and may vary in drape.
2. Apparel Size Chart
Use this chart as a general guide. For the most accurate fit, we recommend measuring yourself using the instructions in Section 3 below.
| Size | Chest (inches) | Waist (inches) | Sleeve Length (inches) | Recommended For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small (S) | 34–36″ | 28–30″ | 32–33″ | Petite to Average Build |
| Medium (M) | 38–40″ | 32–34″ | 33–34″ | Average Build |
| Large (L) | 42–44″ | 36–38″ | 34–35″ | Athletic to Large Build |
| X-Large (XL) | 46–48″ | 40–42″ | 35–36″ | Large Build |
| XX-Large (XXL) | 50–52″ | 44–46″ | 36–37″ | Extra Large Build |
All measurements are approximate and may vary by ±1 inch due to handmade variations.
3. How to Measure Yourself
For the most accurate sizing, we recommend measuring yourself in light clothing or undergarments. Use a soft measuring tape and keep it comfortably loose (not tight).
Chest Measurement
- Measure around the fullest part of your chest, directly under your arms.
- Keep the tape measure level across your back and parallel to the ground.
- The tape should be snug but not tight—you should be able to fit one finger under it.
Example: If your chest measures 39 inches, you would typically wear a Medium (M).
Waist Measurement
- Measure around your natural waistline (where your pants naturally sit).
- Keep the tape comfortably loose—not pulled tight.
- This measurement helps determine how the garment will fit around your midsection.
Example: If your waist measures 33 inches, you would typically wear a Medium (M).
Sleeve Length Measurement
- Start at the center back of your neck.
- Measure across your shoulder to the tip of your wrist with your arm extended.
- This measurement is particularly important for jackets and long-sleeved items.
Example: If your sleeve length measures 33.5 inches, you would typically wear a Medium (M).
4. Unisex Styling & Fit Notes
Many of our traditional Ecuadorian sweaters and jackets are designed with a unisex, relaxed fit that honors the original cultural aesthetic.
For Women
If you prefer a more fitted silhouette, we recommend sizing down one size. For example:
- If your measurements suggest a Medium (M), try a Small (S) for a more tailored fit.
- The relaxed fit of a larger size can be styled with a belt for definition.
For Men
Our unisex sizing works well for most men. If you are between sizes, we recommend sizing up for a comfortable fit.
Layering Considerations
If you plan to layer this item over other clothing (such as a long-sleeved shirt or sweater), consider sizing up for comfort.
5. Ponchos, Ruanas & Wraps
Most of our traditional ponchos, ruanas, and wraps are designed as “One Size Fits Most.” These items are meant to drape loosely over the shoulders and are designed to accommodate a wide range of body types and sizes.
Fit Notes:
- Ponchos typically fall to mid-hip or knee, depending on your height.
- Ruanas (traditional Colombian wraps) are designed to wrap around the shoulders and can be styled in multiple ways.
- All wrap styles are adjustable and can be worn loose or belted for a more defined silhouette.
If you are concerned about length or fit, please contact us before purchasing.
6. Jewelry & Accessories
Necklaces
Most of our handmade necklaces feature adjustable chains ranging from 16 to 18 inches. This length works well for most body types and can be worn close to the neck or longer.
- Petite Frame:Â 16-inch length recommended
- Average Frame: 16–18-inch length recommended
- Larger Frame:Â 18-inch length recommended
Earrings
All earrings are one size and are designed to fit standard pierced ears. If you have concerns about fit or material allergies, please contact us.
Bracelets
Most bracelets are adjustable or come in one size. Please check the product description for specific sizing information.
7. Material-Specific Sizing Notes
Alpaca Wool Blend Sweaters
Alpaca wool is naturally stretchy and will conform to your body shape over time. If you are between sizes, we recommend sizing down for a snug initial fit that will relax slightly as you wear it.
Sheep’s Wool Jackets
Sheep’s wool is durable but less stretchy than alpaca. Size according to your chest measurement for a comfortable fit. These jackets are designed to be worn over light layers.
Cotton Blend Items
Cotton has minimal stretch. Size according to your chest measurement. If you prefer a looser fit, consider sizing up.
Hand-Loomed Textiles
Hand-loomed items may have unique drape and texture. Refer to product-specific measurements on the product page for the most accurate fit.
8. International Sizing Conversion
If you are more familiar with international sizing, use this chart to convert:
| US Size | UK Size | EU Size | Chest (cm) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small (S) | 8 | 36 | 86–91 |
| Medium (M) | 10–12 | 38–40 | 96–101 |
| Large (L) | 14 | 42 | 106–111 |
| X-Large (XL) | 16 | 44 | 116–121 |
| XX-Large (XXL) | 18 | 46 | 126–131 |
9. Care & Fit After Purchase
First Wear
When you first receive your handmade garment, it may feel slightly stiff or have a subtle “new” smell. This is normal and will diminish with wear and gentle washing.
Washing & Fit
- Hand wash in cool water for best results.
- Lay flat to dry to maintain shape.
- Do not machine wash or dry — this can damage the handmade construction.
- Alpaca and wool items may relax slightly after the first wash.
Fit Adjustments
If your garment feels slightly snug after the first wear, it will likely relax as you wear and wash it. If it feels too loose, you can have it tailored by a professional.
